A good documentary editor is worth their weight in gold. More than editors working in other genres, the documentary editor is responsible for finding and shaping story, often without any kind of script.  For directors, working with the right editor is crucial. They make you better. They challenge you to see around your limitations. When you're stymied, they help you find your way. Together, you collaborate to overcome some of the biggest challenges and obstacles in your film. It's a true partnership, and in many ways, editors are the unheralded superstars of your favorite documentaries.

Join producer/director Robert Kenner (Two Days in October; Food, Inc.), as he moderates a discussion with Kate Amend, ACE (Into the Arms of Strangers: The Long Way Home), Kim Roberts (Food, Inc.; Waiting for Superman) and Victor Livingston (Shakespeare Behind Bars; Crumb) of the rewards, and challenges, inherent in the director/editor collaboration, and other pearls of wisdom from the editing room.

Panelists:
Kate Amend, ACE
Victor Livingston

Robert Kenner

Robert Kenner
Robert Kenner's Food, Inc., is one of the top grossing theatrical documentaries of all time, selling nearly 500,000 DVDs.  Food, Inc. received widespread critical acclaim, dozens of awards and accolades, including an Academy Award® nomination, and has influenced current food policy decisions.  Kenner received a Peabody and an Emmy for Two Days in October, depicting simultaneous events in 1967: a deadly Vietcong ambush and a violent campus protest. He was co-filmmaker with Richard Pearce on The Road to Memphis  for the Martin Scorsese series, The Blues. Newsweek called The Road to Memphis “as fine a film ever made about American music” and “the unadulterated gem of the Scorsese Series.” Kenner has directed numerous specials for National Geographic and PBS’s American Experience series, as well as award winning commercials and corporate films for a wide range of clients. Kenner recently completed When Strangers Click that premiered for HBO. He is currently creating a series of web & TV spots about the unsustainability of our industrial food system.

Kate Amend, ACE
Kate Amend, ACE is the editor of the Academy Award®-winning documentary features: Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport and The Long Way Home. Amend is an advisor at the Sundance Institute Editing Lab, and has participated in the Sundance Film Festival as a juror and as a speaker at The Edit Room panel. Cowboy Del Amor, a film Amend edited and co-produced, received both the Audience and Jury Awards at the 2005 South by Southwest Festival and was broadcast on Showtime in April 2006. Other credits include Thin, Skinheads USA (HBO America Undercover), and the feature documentaries Legends about the longest running show in Las Vegas; as well as Metamorphosis: Man Into Woman, a Sundance award-winner.

Victor Livingston
Victor Livingston was nominated for an Eddie in the category of Best Edited Documentary for his work on Crumb. He is a veteran editor of feature and television documentaries. His feature work includes Bukowski: Born Into This, and Shakespeare Behind Bars.  Additional credits include The American Experience, AFI’s 100 Years...100 Movies: Against the Grain, AFI’s 100 Years...100 Movies: The Wilder Shores of Love.

Kim Roberts
Kim Roberts is an Emmy-winning editor of feature documentaries and narrative films. Her recent work includes Food Inc., and Autism: The Musical, winner of two Emmys. Roberts' other films include Oscar® nominees and Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winners Daughter from the Danang and Long Night’s Journey Into Day; Peabody and Emmy Award winner Two Days in October; Independent Spirit Award Winner Lost Boys in Sudan; and South by Southwest Grand Prize winner A Hard Straight. Roberts is the recipient of a Student Academy Award and is a WGA Award nominee. She also works with her husband to write/direct narrative films, including the feature Wilderness Survival For Girls. Roberts received her Masters Degree in Documentary Film Production from Stanford University.

The evening's on-stage conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A, and a reception on the Cinefamily's backyard Spanish patio!
